In spite of strong opposition Merton Council continues to push for approval for additional car parking in Grade II listed Wimbledon Park and the planning committee will discuss the proposals this week. Friends of Wimbledon Park (FOWP) has spoken out strongly against the proposals and will seek to make representations at the planning meeting. We believe the borough has ignored feedback from locals, ignored the important heritage of the park, failed to carry out proper research and is in breach of its own planning laws.
The space in question was used last year by TfL (Transport for London), which did maintenance work on the Tube line and created a temporary hardcore surface to store and operate machinery. The council has left this surface in place so that it has effectively become a permanent structure.
During the consultation period, the council received 109 objections to the proposed car park extension. They continue to insist that additional parking is necessary but have failed to support it with proper information or statistics.
Wimbledon Park is well served by local Tube and bus routes and already has two established permanent car parks.
