The great crested grebe is a year-round resident on the lake
Our environmental and ecology advisor Dave Dawson has been monitoring bird life in the park for many years. He has kindly provided us with a document that covers the population trends for more than 40 species (and includes a helpful photograph for easy identification) over more than 20 years, together with a summary statement on the status of the species. See the report here. Wimbledon Park birds.
It’s fascinating to see which species have now all but disappeared from the park over time – the house martin for one – and which have increased in number, such as the robin, as well as the time of year you’re most likely to spot each species.
Dave has also explained at the end of the document his methodology for the survey. Please note this is to be viewed as a work in progress rather than a finished product.
Whether you are a keen ornithologist or not, this is a fascinating resource for any visitor to the park.
